Do you ever feel like your life is one long performance? Constantly trying to measure up, be enough, do enough—only to end the day with that same old sinking feeling: I still don’t measure up.
If you’ve struggled with disordered eating, perfectionism, or persistent shame around your body or your worth, this may sound all too familiar. So many of us have lived under the pressure of working for love—believing that our value depends on how flawlessly we perform.
But the gospel offers a different way: a life of working from love.
Working For Love: The Burden of Never Being Enough
When we live to earn love, we’re really living under law—under pressure to meet a standard we can never quite reach. Scripture describes this life as one of slavery:
“Now before faith [Jesus] came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.”
“We were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.”
(Galatians 4:3)
This kind of striving leads to:
- A demand for perfection
- Constant fear and anxiety
- Being ruled by feelings that shift and change
- Shame, insecurity, and endless self-evaluation
- A never-ending need to compare ourselves to others
- The exhausting pressure to be “good enough”
It’s a life without peace. There’s no security, because everything depends on me—my performance, my appearance, my achievements.
And if I succeed, I grow prideful. If I fail, I spiral into self-hatred.
This isn’t the life Jesus died to give us.
Working From Love: A Life of Grace and Freedom
Through the finished work of Jesus on the Cross, we are no longer slaves—we are daughters. Redeemed. Accepted. Free.
“God sent his Son… to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons [and daughters].”
(Galatians 4:5)
When we trust in Christ, we begin to live from a place of already being loved, already being chosen, already being fully and forever accepted.
This life is marked by:
- Peace and joy (Romans 8:6)
- Deep security in a God who never changes (Hebrews 13:8)
- Freedom from condemnation (Romans 8:1)
- A heart motivated not by fear, but by love (2 Corinthians 5:14)
- Freedom from comparison—because grace levels the playing field (Romans 3:10–12; 3:21-24)
- Humble confidence, even in our weaknesses
- Guidance by biblical truth, not ever-changing emotions
- Awe of God that replaces fear of man (1 John 4:18)
This is what it means to work from love: knowing we are already accepted, and so we can live freely, no longer performing, but simply walking by faith in step with and dependent on our Father.
Knowing God Deeply Changes Everything
The more we know who God is—truly know Him—the more our hearts begin to rest. As the Psalmist writes:
“Those who know Your name put their trust in You.”
(Psalm 9:10)
This knowledge isn’t just intellectual—it’s personal, experiential, relational. And it grows as we spend time in His Word, looking not for quick fixes, but for His glory.
Little by little, His character begins to reshape our identity. His love disarms our shame. His faithfulness steadies our fears.
We learn to say, with growing confidence:
“I have nothing to hide.
Nothing to lose.
Nothing to prove.”
Because I am already loved. And in Christ, that will never change.
A Gentle Invitation
Sister, if you are weary from striving, if you’re stuck in shame or fear, you don’t have to stay there. The gospel truly is good news for you. Come back to the truth that you are already loved. Not because of how well you perform, but because of what Jesus has already done.
Let His love be the foundation of your healing—body, mind, and soul.
